  • Who is Lottie Moon?

… and why are we still paying her?

    Lottie Moon

Charlotte “Lottie” Diggs Moon was born Dec. 12, 1840, in Albemarle County, Va. she rebelled against Christianity until she was in college. In December 1858, she dedicated her life to Christ and was baptized at First Baptist Church of Charlottesville, Va. Lottie attended Albemarle Female Institute, female counterpart to the University of Virginia. In 1861, she was one of the first women in the South to receive a master’s degree. Edmonia Moon, Lottie’s sister, was appointed to Tengchow, China, in 1872. The following year, Lottie was appointed and joined her sister there.

Lottie served 39 years as a missionary, mostly in China’s Shantung province. She taught in a girls’ school and often made trips into China’s interior to share the good news with women and girls. Lottie frequently wrote letters to the United States, detailing Chinese culture, missionary life and the great physical and spiritual needs of the Chinese people. Additionally, she challenged Southern Baptists to go to China or give so that others could go. By 1888, Southern Baptist women had organized and helped collect $3,315 to send workers needed in China.

Lottie died aboard a ship in the Japanese harbor of Köbe on Dec. 24, 1912. She was 72 years old. In 1918, Woman’s Missionary Union named the annual Christmas offering for international missions after the woman who had urged them to start it. (From IMB.org website)

This year’s Lottie Moon Christmas Offering’s (LMCO) goal is $165,000,000.00. The LMCO funds 52% of the International Mission Board’s budget. The Cooperative Program funds 36%. The remaining funds come from investments and World Hunger donations. Our church’s goal is $750.00. We have raised $142.00 so far.

Pray for the generosity of Southern Baptists to give to the LMCO to meet the needs of missionaries around the world. Your support allows you to participate in the Great Commission as you support those who “go”.

  • Church News

The office will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.  We will have our regular Wednesday prayer and Bible Study, but it will begin at 6:30, instead of 7.

The church elected a search committee to find a Minister of Music and Youth in a special business meeting Sunday evening.  Pray for the committee as they find God’s man for our church.

  • Bits and Bytes

Here are some “sound bites” from yesterday’s sermon, “Bless the Lord, O My Soul”:

    • Count your blessings, not your burdens.
    • Diseases of the soul include sin, depression, hatred, fear, doubt, lust, pride, greed…
    • God can heal our souls, through Jesus Christ.
    • A right relationship with God can lead to a healthy life.
    • A right relationship with God can lead to a meaningful life.
    • Don’t get to the end of your life and discover you have wasted it!
    • How do we praise Him? With our life!
    • The benefits of God include eternal life, the Holy Spirit, joy, peace, forgiveness, love, purpose…

Due to a recording error, there will be no online recording of this week’s sermon.

  • Mission Quote of the Week

“If you found a cure for cancer, wouldn’t it be inconceivable to hide it from the rest of mankind? How much more inconceivable to keep silent the cure from the eternal wages of death.” – Dave Davidson

  • Willis Farewell

    Cake for Willis Family

Sunday evening, we said “farewell” to the Willis family as they left to serve with the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children in Owasso.  We presented them with a reception of cake and ice cream and a gift with a card signed by all.

We will certainly miss them all.

    Willis Family

May God bless you as you continue to serve Him.  We’ll keep you in our prayers!

  • MBA Report

Yesterday, the 95th Annual Meeting of the Muskogee Baptist Association convened at First Baptist Church in Muskogee.  Donald and Betty Blair, Willie Rice, and I attended as messengers.

Reports were given from various ministries.  Rev Kent Kellogg, former DOM for MBA presented the doctrinal sermon on stewardship and Rev Claudio Valencia presented a passionate sermon on missions.  Yours truly was elected to a two year term on the Missions and Ministry Committee and was also selected to give the missions sermon at the 96th Annual Meeting, which will be held Nov 3, 2008, at FBC Hulbert.

I had the privilege of reading scripture and giving the opening prayer for the evening session.

We passed several resolutions including one to continue to provide Biblical teaching regarding gambling and to stand firmly against it and the lottery and another which affirms God’s plan for heterosexual marriages without fear of apology.  The best one, however, was that “we the churches of the MBA will make the Great Commission” and its fulfillment a priority in our churches, and that we will develop and implement biblical strategies to effectively reach our communities for Christ”.

The DOM report requested that each church increase their giving to the MBA by 1/2 of one per cent.  He also invited all churches to participate in “Missions-Plus”, which is simply an straight gift of $50 each month dedicated to ethnic ministries.

I am proud to be a part of the Muskogee Baptist Association.  The leadership of Bro Bill Sherrill and Bro Gary McKean is exemplary.  Bro Claudio’s Hispanic ministry is off to a great start.  Dr. Bill Haynes provides biblical counselling to our area.  Bro Rowdy Morris is literally invading the college campuses with BCM.

May God continue to bless the efforts of the MBA!

    Bro Rick
