  • Updates

Are you getting ready for Christmas?  Are you making room for Jesus this Christmas?

I wanted to give an update on the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.  To date, we have collected $208.00!  We still have a way to go to meet our goal of $750.00

This week, we’ll enjoy our monthly fellowship Saturday morning at 8:30 as we eat breakfast together in the fellowship hall.

Don’t forget to donate a poinsettia to the church in memory of or in honor of someone.  Provide me with the details and we’ll include it in a list in the bulletin.

    Have a great week!

  • Bits and Bytes

Here are some “sound bites” from Sunday’s sermon, “The King That Missed Christmas”:

    • Don’t be so busy trying to celebrate Christmas that you miss Christ.
    • Herod the Great had incredible wealth.  He was powerful, prestigious, and paranoid.
    • The shepherds were poor, bored, and open to hear the Word of the Lord.
    • Jesus was incredibly poor.  He owned nothing and was even stripped of His clothes at his execution.
    • God sent Herod three international messengers to let Herod know that a King had been born.
    • Everyone could see the star of Jesus, but Herod ignored it.
    • Instead of rejoicing at the birth of our Savior, he sought to destroy the New Born.
    • Herod was too preoccupied with entertaining dignitaries, completing governmental tasks, and preserving his own power to perceive the birth of Christ.
    • We, too, are often too preoccupied with decorating, entertaining, shopping, partying, etc, to truly acknowledge the birth of Christ.

Make this season a time where you take time for Jesus.  After all,

JESUS is the REASON for the SEASON!

You can listen to Sunday’s sermon here.

  • Sunday’s Coming!

This coming Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent.  Advent is a time where the western church acknowledges the coming of the season by remembering different items related to Christmas.  We will observe Advent at Immanuel by using the traditional Advent Candle & Wreath.  Sunday’s sermon will be the first of a 4 part Advent series, Searching for Christmas, with the sermon, “The King Who Missed Christmas”, referring to King Herod.  Sunday evening we’ll take a look at Jesus’ claim to be “Greater Than Solomon”.

Don’t forget the “Hanging of the Greens” this Saturday at 10 am!

    Invite someone to Sunday School!

  • Library Donation

Several books have recently been donated to our church library.  Librarian Jean Willey has been working hard to get them registered and they are currenly available for checking out.

  • Hanging of the Greens

This Saturday, we will celebrate the Hanging of the Greens as we prepare our church building to celebrate Christmas.  We’ll meet together at 10 am and go from there.  We’ll have light refreshments afterwards.

We invite you to participate in person, or, if you are not available, you may participate by contributing funds to buy new Christmas decorations, as our old ones are looking rather, well, old.

But, more importantly, even as we prepare our building to celebrate Christmas, don’t forget to prepare YOURSELF to celebrate Christmas!  Take time to listen to God.  Take time to worship Him.  Take time to Celebrate Jesus!

  • Bits and Bytes

Here are some “sound bites” from Sunday’s sermon, “Blessed Assurance”:

    • You CAN KNOW that you are saved!
    • The Apostle John, through the power of the Holy Spirit, wrote the book of I John in order that we may know that we have eternal life.
    • When we pray according to God’s will, He hears us.
    • If He hears us, He will answer us.  (But the prayer must be according to His will.)
    • That assurance comes through a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
    • God deems us as righteous when we are covered by the Blood of Christ.
    • When you see a brother sinning, step in to reprove him.
    • God keeps His children.

You can listen to Sunday’s sermon here.

  • Sunday’s Coming!

Sunday morning, we’ll finish our study of I John by looking at chapter 5 verses 13-21.  We’ll see how we have “Blessed Assurance!”  Sunday evening, we’ll take a look at Isaiah’s vision of God and his response with the sermon “I Have Seen the Lord!”

Until then, have a blessed, happy Thanksgiving!  Be careful if you are traveling anywhere and be sure to make Thanksgiving in your home a time of witness for your family and guests who maynot know Him!

  • A Visit to “Lottie Moon Country”

Rick Boyne at the Lottie Moon Monument in Penglai, China.

In May 2006, I had the privilege to visit Penglai, Shandong, China and see where Lottie Moon lived and ministered. In the photo above, I am standing next to a monument erected in 1919 (I think) to the memory of Lottie Moon by the members of her church in Penglai. After the cultural revolution, the monument was found in the yard of the church and was re-erected to her memory. The Red Guard had scratched out some of the characters, but it is still readable (all in Chinese characters, of course).

The church Lottie Moon attended in Penglai, China.

The picture above is of the church Lottie Moon attended in Penglai, China. (You can see the monument in front of the left window.) The church is still in use but is no longer large enough for the congregation. They have recently built a new facility just to the right of the building, but still use this church’s baptistry because the new church doesn’t have a water source for the baptistry. The pastor reported that in 2005, they baptized over 400 people.

Remains of Lottie Moon’s School for Girls in Penglai, China.

The picture above shows the remains of the Girls School that Lottie Moon where taught. The building was torn down because of it’s condition, but the outline on the remaining wall can still be seen. In the pile of debris stacked against the wall are roof tiles from the original school. I was fortunate enough to be able to get one for my personal collection. I was told that those tiles were purchased with funds from one of the original offerings collected for China by Southern Baptists. Those offerings later became known as the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

I hope this gives you a little bit of insight into the world of Lottie Moon. Please give generously to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering!
